The American Military Society (AMS) was founded in Washington, D.C. on August 1, 1982 by three Air Force retired noncommissioned officers who recognized the need for an organization to represent the voice of all uniformed services personnel to America’s elected and military leaders. AMS founders Frank J. Cusimano, John Concannon, and Francis C. Fini established the association, and Francis C. Fini later became the first president.

The first leaders of the association hoped that by joining together they could provide assistance and advice to other military men and women. This concern for others fostered natural fraternal relations among members from all branches of the uniformed services.

Two broad common goals were conceived for the American Military Society:

1. To broaden public understanding of the role that military men and women play in the welfare and security of the nation; and

2. To improve the quality of life of those who serve, and have served, the nation in the uniformed services.

AMS’s highest priority from its founding is providing first-class service to our members. We are a leading voice on compensation and benefit matters for all members of the military community. We provide expert advice and guidance to our members.

Douglas S. Russell, Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army (Retired), led the AMS as its National President from 1995 to 2009. An Army man all his life and as AMS President, CSM Russell was always talking about “taking care of soldiers.” That’s the way he viewed his Army career, and that’s the way he viewed his job as AMS President. He was concerned about taking care of military men and women, no matter what their status: Active Duty, Guard/Reserve, Retired, or Veteran.

CSM Russell built AMS’ reputation as a stalwart advocate for military men and women and their families. He was a force guided AMS’ representation of its members by advocating for its members’ interests, ensuring the military and veteran benefits its members earned with their service to the nation are maintained.

Today, AMS is one of the nation’s most influential association of military men and women of all branches of the uniformed services. It is an independent, nonprofit, politically nonpartisan organization.

With more than 55,000 members from every branch of service — including active duty, National Guard, Reserve, retired, former veterans, and their families — we are a powerful force speaking for a strong national defense and representing the interests of uniformed services personnel at every stage of their careers.
